Lake Kelimutu, part of Kelimutu National Park, is situated on the peak of Mount Kelimutu which is at an altitude of 1.631 meters. Kinds of flora that you can find there are Kesambi (Schleichera oleosa), casuarinas tree (Casuarina equisetifoia), and Edelweiss. Moreover, types of fauna living around the lake are deer (Cervus timorensis), pig forest (Sus sp.), red jungle fowl (gallus gallus) and hawk (Elanus sp.).

There are three backwaters in the lake which tend to turn their colours. For instance, the water in one of those, change from red to bottle green then someday it can be pink and in another backwater, the water turn from bottle green into light green. The last one, the water can change from deep brown into azure.

Then you must continue the trip to the location by walk for around 2,5 km. From February 2008 up to now, the entrance ticket of the lake is IDR 3.000. However, on weekend, the entrance ticket will be IDR 5.000.

Lake Poso

Lake Poso, which is situated at an altitude of 657 meters, is a worth visiting tourism destination located in Tentena City, Poso District, Central Sulawesi Province. This site, which is the third biggest lake in Indonesia, ranges 32 km in length and 16 km in width, with 360 meters of deep water in the south and 510 meters deep in the north.

Lake Toba is the most famous lake in Indonesia. It is 100 km long and 30 km wide thus many people agree that Lake Toba is the biggest lake in the world. An island in the middle of the lake is Samosir Island at an altitude of 1.000 meters.

According a group of researchers from Michigan Technological University, there was a huge explosion that is famous as Toba eruption/Toba event which occurred about 75.000 years ago. The total amount of material erupted from the explosion was about 2.000 cubic km. Toba ash layer resulted from the explosion covered the entire Sumatra Island and Indonesia for about two weeks. The explosion formed a caldera then was gradually filled with water. Samosir Island appeared after a long term of magma uplifting from the earth.

Lake Toba has a very enchanted scenery for being surrounded by green hills. It offers beautifully magnificent view, fresh air, and tranquillity. Lake Tempe is a tourism destination in South Sulawesi province that are frequently visited by tourists either domestic or foreign. The lake, which is 13.000 hectare in width, seems like a giant washbasin when it is viewed from above. You can watch many interesting attractions such as traditional boat race, decorated boat competition, kites competition, the election of Ana` dara (princess) and Kallolona (prince) of Wajo district, Padendang (beating mortar), traditional music performance, Bissu dance played by transsexuals and other traditional performances. It is aimed to keep the unity and the familiarity among the fishermen by “3-S” principals, Sipakatau, Sipakainge, and Sipakalebbi (Respecting, advising, and appreciating each others). Watching these performances, you will know more about Bugis culture especially Bugis in Wajo district.

The existence of Lake Maninjau has created a folktale called "Single Sembilan" (The nine Bachelors). People living around the lake believe that those nine Bachelors are real. Once upon a time, there was a family consists of nine Bachelors and a beautiful girl named Sani. There was a man named Sagiran who loved her, they love each other until one day they were accused of doing contemptible thing by the Bachelors. In order to prove the Bachelors 'assumption, both Sani and Sagiran jumped into the cauldron of Mount Tinjau. Before jumping into the cauldron, they swore that the mount would not explode if they did that contemptible thing, otherwise, the mount would explode if they did not do it. Finally, there was a huge explosion causing a big hole that was fulfilled by water that is believed as the cause of the existence of Lake Maninjau.

The first President of Indonesia, Mr. Ir. Soekarno, batas ever visited Lake Maninjau, as an expression of his amazement, he wrote a pantun  (Malayan bait ramalan) sounded " Jika makan aria pinang, makanlah dengan sirih hijau, jangan datang ke ranah Minang, jika belum mampir ke Maninjau " which means that he suggested everyone visiting West Sumatera must visit Lake Maninjau because of its wonderful scenery.

We may compare it with other famous lakes from all over the world seperti lake in Luzern, Zurich, dan Swiss. Lake Maninjau has shinny turquoise water with the Flapping leaves of coconut trees and hills around the lake that make a wonderful view in Lake Maninjau.


Where Location and Access go to Lake Maninjau?

It is located in Tanjung Raya, in the district of Agam, West Sumatra provinsi , Indonesia.  Ada dua alternative ways to reach the destination, from the east and from the west. If you choose to start it from the west, it will be started from Padang to Lubuk Basung (the capital of Agam district) passing by Pariaman city. It spends about a half an hour day by land using any accessible public transportation or chartered car that can be easily found there. Ranau Lake is the widest one in South Sumatra. It is around 8x16 km2  in width with the scene of Mount Semiung on its behind. It is also surrounded by hills and valleys. Moreover, its water is so clear.

The lake is a result of a natural process. It comes from an earthquake and volcanic explosion that created huge shale. A stream from the Mount Semiung later empties to this shale that turned it to a lake.There is natural hot water at the feet of Mount Semiung, which comes from the bottom of the lake. A waterfall, the Subik, can also be seen around the lake.

Situ Patengan derives from two words of Sundanese language, Situ means lake and patengan means searching for each other. Such derivation has its own history that is, when a couple who loved each other had to live in separate. They were Raden Indrajaya and Dewi Rengganis. As they suffered a long term of sadness, their tears caused to flood a land that in recent it is known as Situ Patengan (Lake Patengan). Finally, they could meet each other after a long term of being separated, but Dewi Rengganis asked for an island to be located in the center of the lake and likiwise a boat for hanging around the island. An island called Asmara Island/Sasaka Island in the center of the lake is assumed as the shaping out of the boat of the couple.

From the story above, there is belief that a couple who want to have an everlasting love, it is recommended to come to the lake and hang around Asmara Island and Batu Cinta (Stone of Love).

This 60 ha lake has magnificent view of surrounding area and green scenery of Rancabali tea farming land. Likewise, you will see pine forest in Patengan Natural Preservation that is still on its nature. You can rent speedboat, traditional boat, and other water transportation in the location to look around the beauty of the location. Moreover, fishing for people who love it is allowed. Around the location, some other small islands are available that are as beautiful as Situ Patengan. In common, local inhabitants function the lake for fishing. Moreover, it is also used as a proper place for camping.

    Lake Linow is a unique lake for its high level of sulphur content that cause it  tends to turn its color based on the viewing perspective and the lighting angle  of the sun. There are numerous endemic faunas like Blibis birds and  insects called “Sayok” or “Komo.” Those winged insects living in  the water are consumed by the inhabitants around the lake.

Representing a  tourist destination in Riau, Lake Bakuok is a tributary of Kampar River  forming an island-shaped delta. The lake‘s ring is about one kilometer, whose water  empties to Kampar River. The existence of Lake Laut Tawar among the Aceh people is a proud for them regarding that it is a frequently visited destination either by local or foreign tourists. The water is not only used by people living in Central Aceh District, but also people who live in other surrounding districts.

There is a story relating to the existence of depik fish having slim shape and shiny scale that live in Lake Laut Tawar. People believe that depik fish is a grain of unhusked paddy that was thrown to the lake then later on shaped a fish. Depik fish appears to the lake‘s surface on certain occasions, especially on rainy season. Before the coming of rainy season, the fish hides in the slope of Bur Kelieten Mount, south of the lake. Depik is a miracle for Gayo people regarding that it will not be over though consumed forever and ever.

Two hills flanking the lake are the magnificent scenery enhancing the beauty of the lake. The meeting of the land and the water is the livehood resources for people living around the location, especially Gayo people. It is called laut (literally means sea) since the lake is as wide as a sea and called tawar (freshwater) as the water is not salty. Depik fish is the only species of fish that can only be found in Lake Laut Tawar.

Lake Laut Tawar (5.472 ha in width, 17 km in length, and 5,5 km square) lies east of Takengon City in the highland of Gayo (at an altitude of 1.250 meters), Laut Tawar Sub-district, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Province, Indonesia. Accessing Takengon City, you will pass by Bireun City by taking public transportations. It is around 5 hours with more and less IDR 25000 for the cost. The another alternative way to Takengon City is via Blang Kejeren and Kutacane.
